College Students Laid Off

Out in California, the usual rabble of lefty, anarchic students are throwing a tantrum because their universities are cutting budgets.

One interesting note from a protest by UC Davis students:
Police arrested Laura Mitchell, a fifth-year women's studies major, who lead the crowd on the march using a bullhorn. Mitchell is accused of failing to disperse.
This is an good example of how many of these lefties are professional students (Really, does it take 5 years to finish a women's studies degree program?).

So in a sense, if they can't go to UC Davis anymore they are not just losing an education, they are really getting laid off.

I suppose this *is* a crisis for the left, given that it may deny them access to comfortable student lounges. I can see the headline now...."University Budgets Cut - Leftists and Slackers Hardest Hit"

Hey, I'm sitting in a comfortable student lounge right now! And I'm not even a lefty...

I've been studying women all my life so 5 years doesn't seem too long.

Please, please, please, will people stop misspelling the word 'led'. The woman led the crowd on the march.

I know it's not your error, since it's a quote, but for the sake of education and humanity, it deserves a [sic] next to it. If they're going to get an education, you might as well educate them, or anyone else reading the quote.

Without knowing more about Ms. Mitchell's individual situation it is hard to know if the 'fifth-year women's study major' is really something to mock or not. I knew plenty of people in college that took more than four years to graduate...of course, that is because most of us were working at the same time. Still, perhaps that is Ms. Mitchell's story also.

You said "protest" twice.

Regarding the word "led", maybe the article in the Sacbee was written in Ebonics by one of those set-aside journalists.

Andrew,

A "Women's Studies" major is something to mock regardless of how long it takes to get a degree. That major tells any potential employer, "not only don't I know anything, I am going to sue you."

On the other hand, she will probably get a job in government.

DLM,
If you ever figure them out please let me know. I have been married for almost 50 years and have both daughters and granddaughters and I have yet to figure them out. Without them life would be dull.

This was a Fifth-Year Women's Studies major.

I gave up on Fifth-Year Women as a study, decades ago. There's a Law.

Twenty-Fifth Year Women are looking good to me, anymore.

Why are we teaching hate anyhow? Eliminate those programs that only exist to teach students to hate people different from themselves and we'd save some money. Women's studies, black studies, chicano studies and the like are useless, produce no economic benefit to the students or to the community and produce hate filled drones incapable of any career outside academia.

California is a wasteland in part due to armies of 'activist' college students who march for cause de jur. They need to get real jobs or at least get a degree which leads to more than a craptocracy placement in the Obama administration.

"Women's studies," "Black studies," et al do serve a useful function. They allow colleges to "diversify" their faculty without having to dilute the professoriate in the real departments like physics, history, electrical engineering, etc. with useless hacks and PC drones. They can put all the hacks into the "Studies" departments, where they don't do much damage to the core curriculum.

Unfortunately, unlike staff, students in the "Studies" programs serve no useful function at all.

"Unfortunately, unlike staff, students in the "Studies" programs serve no useful function at all."

Well... some could argue a few of them can be useful as props, visual stimulation (in agreement with Comatus' view of the 25-yr olds) or perhaps comedy relief?

Just sayin'...

Anything in college called "studies" involves no study at all, just as anything called "science" involves no science.

That being said, lots fo kids take 5 or 6 years to graduate, because they need to take required courses which are not given every year, due to the demands of teaching "studies" and "science."

This is good news. All those stupid 'women's studies' degrees will dry up.

I bet none of the rioting students were actually studying engineering, business, or science.

I bet that funding cuts won't reduce enrollment in those useful fields one bit.

This article will tell you everything you need to know about 'Woman's Studies Majors', and the damage they do.

A fifth year Women's Studies Major

This tells me that the budget cuts are 5 years overdue.

This is why Arnold was elected in the first place.

There is no reason for a potential waitress to receive indoctrination masquerading as education at taxpayer expense.
